Light requirements for a Hoya Australis

Hoya Australis thrives in bright indirect sunlight. Placing them 3 to 4 feet away from a window will provide them with enough sun to grow strong.

They do not like direct sunlight, especially afternoon sun. After the morning, the sun is too much and it will scorch their leaves. 

While hoya's can survive in lower light conditions, they will grow faster in brigher rooms.

How much water does a Hoya Australis need?

We allow the top 2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot from overwatering. Watering once a week is the most common advice you will find. If your Hoya is in a very bright room, or in a warmer room, you will notice the soil drying faster and you have to water more often.

It is also possible to wait until the Hoya's leaves pucker just a little before watering again. This is a drought-tolerant plant and if you forget to water for a week the plant will be just fine.

Humidity requirements

The average house humidity of 30% to 40% will be fine for your Hoya Australis. They are a plant that can learn to adapt to almost any room condition.

If you want to maximize your plants' potential, humidity up around 50% and 60% is optimal. Getting that is easy! A humid bathroom or a window in the kitchen will tend to have more humidity than a living room.

Soil requirements

All Hoyas should be potted with drainage. Well draining potting mix from most stores will be perfect. This is a plant that is sensitive to too much water, so adding some perlite into the mix will definitely help if you wanted to go the extra mile, but it's optional.

Hoya Australis Flower

The Hoya Australis is a flowering succulent, and if the conditions are right your Hoya will bloom and produce the flowers shown below.

Hoya flowers grow in umbels, or half sphere-like clusters. You can see an umbel preparing to open. Each flower consists of three parts: the calyx, corolla, and corona.

The petals of the flower is the corolla, which is typically 5-lobed and star-shaped.

The Hoya Australis was named after where it was found: Australia. It is part of a family found natively in Eastern Asia (China or India) and Australia due to its amazing heat and drought tolerance. Its tolerance of many conditions has helped it spread to different parts of the world.

Like most hoya's, the Australis is non-toxic to people and animals, which makes it a great choice for homes with pets and young children.

Unlike other tropical plants, Hoya's don't mind being root-bound. When they are mature in a 6" pot they can be root-bound for quite some time.

Pruning is a way to enhance the beauty of your Hoya. It will also help it grow new leaves, get bushier, and will get rid of the old and damaged leaves.

When pruning you should always clean your tools beforehand. This ensures that no bacteria is introduced in the process. Remove a small amount of leaves at a time so you do not stun the plant. If a plant feels that it is damaged too much, it may hinder growth, so go slow.
