Tradescantia Nanouk Care Information

Light requirements for a Tradescantia Nanouk

Tradescantia Nanouk plants can thrive in many different conditions but it is more suited to bright indirect light. Most rooms with a window will do just fine, and rooms with brighter light will help it grow faster than dark rooms.

As long as direct sun is not able to touch the leaves for extended periods you are doing everything right.

How much water for a Tradescantia Nanouk

Nanouk's like to dry out between waterings. if you press your finger an inch or so into the soil and feel dampness then it doesn’t need any more water. At this point the plant will have "some weight" to it, indicating there is moisture in the soil.

If your finger comes out dry with no soil stuck to it, then it is time to water. As with most plants, use the most pure water you can.

Soil requirements

Well-draining and loose potting mix will let your purple plant thrive. The goal is to not have the plant sitting in moist soil for extended periods. Plants need water and air, so if there is too much water the plant will starve for air.

Humidity requirements

Average humidity in a house is great, and this plant can handle lower humidity areas, so it’s great in any room or office.

Origin, Family, and Information

The Tradescantia Nanouk (Tradescantia albiflora 'Nanouk'), is also known as Fantasy Venice. Like most plants it has multiple names.

It is a type of spiderwort plant that become famous on Instagram, and is now a must-have for any plant lover. Pink, purple, green, and stripes create patterns on its lush leaves on stems.

Under the right conditions (bright, indirect light), it can grow and actually trail. You may even find small white and yellow flowers emerging from its pink buds during the growing season.

This purple plant looks absolutely amazing in the light.

Tradescantia Nanouk Origins

Nanouk plants are native predominately to South America, however you will hear that this purple plant is from the Netherlands.

With advances in technology, plants are "tissue cultured", and their genome can be altered, and this is the case with the Tradescantia Nanouk. It was cultured and designed by a grower, which is becoming more popular.

Fertilizing and Growing a Tradescantia Nanouk

This stunning purple plant is a hardy grower, and doesn’t require much fertilizer. If you’d like to fertilize, feed it with a standard houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength every two to four weeks during the spring and summer growing seasons.

We have the perfect fertilizer that can be used every time you water your plant.

Your Nanouk will grow vertical, but if left alone it will start to trail. You may include a climbing device such as a moss pole or a ladder in your pot if you want to keep it vertical.
